“Doctor, doctor, give me the news…”

Standard

At the insistence of Neil (and my own gut-feeling), I’ve scheduled an appointment at the OrthoCarolina Foot & Ankle Institute with Dr. James Sebold.

Things just aren’t getting better in my ankle. It is waking me up at night when I move in my sleep because it hurts. Depending on the position, I can’t put any weight on it at all (other positions it feels just fine). Unfortunately, I think to truly heal the problem I need to stay off my foot. Since that isn’t going to happen, I guess I better get some professional advice and help with it.

The other annoying thing is that my right leg is getting sore from taking all the weight off the other one.

More thoughts: I’ve been thinking about this all day today and wanted to add some thoughts. First, I am completely and utterly frustrated. However, I need to remember that this is a journey and I am still just at the beginning of it. There will be bumps and detours and outright roadblocks…but I can get through and around all of them in time (sorry about the persistence of metaphors there). Patience is not my virtue. Now that I’ve made my mind up on making these changes in my life, I want to see their results now! But it simply doesn’t work that way – sometimes it is easy to forget that (at least it is easy for me to forget that).

Also, could health insurance be any more complicated? Well, don’t really ask me to answer that because yes, I believe it will be even more so in the near future if some things aren’t changed…but I digress from the general topics of this blog. I spent hours this morning trying to figure out whether the doctors at this facility are part of the “in network” coverage on my insurance. I couldn’t find them or the facility anywhere in the directory when accessing it from an internal company website, but when I went directly through my provider website there they were. So I’ve crossed my fingers that they are. And I am still not sure, even if they are part of the “in” network, whether my HRA covers the out-of-pocket expenses associated with this type of visit. I guess we’ll see!

Lastly, I am surprised at myself. I am missing running. I never, ever thought I would utter those words. This whole thing started out as a way to get healthy. Just a means to an end – I never in a million years thought I would actually grow to enjoy it as much as I do.

  1. I hope that the doctor is able to get you some help and give you some pointers on avoiding other injuries. I hope you’re able to do some other things to at least keep active while you have to rest from running. Are you still able to go for walks or is that too much too?

It’s great that you’ve found at least a like for running. I’m one of those people who has tried running but never got into it. I don’t know if I just didn’t push myself hard enough or that it just really isn’t my thing. So huge kudos to you for taking on the getting healthy thing with running and enjoying it!

    • I should caveat that I really don’t like the running much while I am doing it about 70% of the time, but I love the way I feel when I have finished and accomplished something that I set out to do. 🙂

Unfortunately, I haven’t really been able to put any weight on that foot since Saturday. I’ve been hopping and hobbling around here like an 80 year old lady! I was hoping that it was because it was fresh and after a couple days of resting and icing it, it would improve. But, I am still hobbling and hopping which is what finally prompted the doctor appointment. So not even any walking right now, but I have been trying to do some crunches and leg and arm exercises that don’t require me to stand (or at least not put any real weight on that foot).

Thankfully, I am confident that it will heal and I can continue on with things, my only real concern right now is the timing of it all with the race coming up fast in March.

    • Not until next Friday. They had one on Tuesday, but I’m going to be out of town. I’ve been wallowing in some self-pity a bit this week. I need to get back on track with the strength training until I can walk/run again.

  3. I totaully feel for you. I know how much it sucks to be sidelined by an injury. Definitely find a way to get some water exercise in. We have a couple of community colleges nearby that offer swimming and aqua aerobics classes – do you? Our parks and recreation department does the same thing. Have you tried bicycling on one of those stationary bikes? If you set it to the least possible resistance you might be able to handle it.

Keep RICE-ing it. It’ll help. When I had a bad tendinitis flareup in my wrist, the therapist recommended massaging the painful areas with ice. That might help too!

    • The city rec department has a fitness center that I think also has a pool. I’m looking into it. The hard part right now (well, all the time) is that I travel every week. So I haven’t had a chance to go check out the center or the local Y.

Ice has been my BFF lately! lol Massages, bags/packs, etc. Good thing hotels have ice machines. I just carry a zip- lock bag with me.

    • Hey lady! No worries at all. I’m stressing a little myself here, but I’m surviving. I am, however, so excited for you this weekend! You’re going to rock this run!!!! Can’t wait to hear how it goes.

And I’m coming to Seaside regardless if the ankle outcome here.

      • You should talk to my friend Tanya Kuelbs, she does Galloway and has had great success, run walk run. I want to try it but am having trouble with the concept.

  4. Huh I need to check out the settings for this blog layout, I can’t reply to any comments beyond the first two…anyway @Holly – I would love to! I’ve looked at his 10k and 1/2 marathon training programs and like the way they are set up. I think they are particularly good for beginner types, though I know he really promotes the run/walk stuff at all levels. And I think they will be especially good for me since I will be so far behind with just the running part by the time I get this ankle thing figured out. If I can get the pain under control then at least I can start up some other form of aerobic activity to help with my general fitness and weight-loss. I need to do something! I am starting to go stir-crazy here.

    • its going to be great. Can you send me a message on FB or just text me (I sent my phone no through DM. which hotel it is that you and niel chose again? Wendy and I were looking at one in Destin, Fl, but I thought before I book, we should def try to at least be in the same town….. 🙂 Can not wait to hear what the MD says. please message me!!!
